AADSTS7000215: Invalid client secret provided

Issue

When using a Microsoft 365 activity with the Application ID and Secret authentication method, you may encounter the error: AADSTS7000215: Invalid client secret provided. Ensure the secret being sent in the request is the client secret value, not the client secret ID, for a secret added to app <appID>. Trace ID: <traceID>.

The error occurs because the secret ID is used instead of the secret value, which is the correct one.

Solution

  1. In Azure, go to App registrations, and select your application.
  2. Navigate to the Overview tab, and then to the Certificates & secrets tab, and make sure you copy the Secret Value, not the Secret ID.

If you encounter the error AADSTS700025: Client is public so neither 'client_assertion' nor 'client_secret' should be presented, check the dedicated troubleshooting page.
