Disaster recovery - Active/Passive and Active/Active

This article walks you through the core concepts and architecture of Automation Suite disaster recovery, covering both Active/Passive and Active/Active deployments.

Ensuring continuous business automation is at the core of any automation platform. Automation Suite can withstand the complete failure of nodes, entire data centers, or regions. You can deploy Automation Suite as an Active/Active or Active/Passive configuration.

Both configurations require the two clusters to have a High Availability Add-on license.

Automation Suite multi-site deployments in Active/Passive or Active/Active mode support the following scenarios:

  • Same-site deployment – Two Automation Suite clusters deployed in the same site or data center;
  • Cross-site deployment – Two Automation Suite clusters deployed in different data centers;
  • Same-region deployment – Two Automation Suite clusters deployed in the same region either in the same data center or in different data centers in the same area;
  • Cross-region deployment – Two Automation Suite clusters deployed in different regions.

For Active/Active configurations, you must ensure the round trip latency is under 10ms between both the Automation Suite clusters.

The following table provides details on which Automation Suite products you can deploy in Active/Passive and Active/Active mode.

Note:
  • You can install products that are not supported in Disaster Recovery with Active/Passive and Active/Active. However, in Active/Passive deployments, you cannot use these products when the second cluster is in use or active. In Active/Active deployments, the traffic for the unsupported services in the secondary cluster must always be redirected to the primary cluster by running a script.

  • To deploy all the Automation Suite products in Active mode, see High Availability – Three availability zones.
