Capturing with the recorder

Important:

Unassisted Task Mining new architecture is currently supported in US, Europe, and Japan regions. If your project is on the new architecture (projects created after June of 2023), the recorder must also be suitable for the new architecture. This means that you should install the new version of the recorder and start recording using this recorder. If your project is still on the previous architecture, the recorder must also be on the previous architecture.

The Recorder Client can be accessed by the users who received an invitation to participate in the discovery process and installed it. It's used to facilitate the recording process management and other specific information that the users might need.

Note:

Users across multiple devices can record as the same recording user in an UTM project.

To access it, select the icon displayed in the lower left-hand corner of the screen.

Start capturing

When the desktop client is launched for the first time, you're asked to sign in. To do so, follow the steps below:

  1. Select Sign In and a browser page opens up where you might be asked to log in using your credentials, or if already on the Task Mining page, the Task Mining client will automatically log in with your credentials.

  2. Select the desired tenant for which you wish to record and select Continue. If you have multiple tenants, select the appropriate one from the Tenant drop-down list.

  3. Prepare the capturing environment at this moment to avoid recording irrelevant screenshots - just close the apps that you're not going to use as part of your task.

Check out the instructions for recording displayed on the consent screen, and prepare the capturing environment accordingly to avoid recording irrelevant screenshots - just close the apps that you're not going to use as part of your task.

    Note:

Ensure you give consent to record your actions by checking the checkbox above the Start button.

  • The status of the recording application: this can be either Stopped or Started and can be changed only by the Administrator or Project Administrator from the Admin Console.
  • The Pause option: use it to pause the recording for a maximum of 1 hour.

This is helpful when you want to avoid capturing personal data or something that might increase noisiness in recorded data.

Recording data

If enabled, the Control Panel pop-up icon is displayed on the right-hand side of the accessed pages or windows. As Unassisted Task Mining is designed to capture the steps you make in certain applications, the Control Panel icon will indicate this through a message and its color:

Important: It is not recommended to have UiPath® Studio open and running while using the Task Mining application.
  • If the icon is green it signifies that the application is being recorded.

  • If the icon is grey it signifies that the application is not being recorded. This is caused by the fact that the application was not added to the allow list.

When a browser page, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera is captured, the URL where the interaction occurs is also recorded to the CSV file as ‘BrowserURL’ property. This contains the full path of the page captured.

Recording with Multiple Devices

Important:

Unassisted Task Mining new architecture is currently supported in US, Europe, and Japan regions. If you want to record data for a project on multiple devices, you must make sure that the recorders you are using on the different devices are of the same version as your project. If your project is on the new architecture (projects created after June of 2023), the recorders on the different devices must also be suitable for the new architecture. If your project is still on the previous architecture, the recorders must also be on the previous architecture.

With Task Mining, you can record data for a project with multiple devices. This can be useful when you work on different devices. For example, at the office you work with a desktop computer, and when you work from home you use a company laptop.

To record with multiple devices:

  1. Download and install the recorder on the different devices.

  2. Log in to the installed recorders to authenticate yourself.

  3. Select the check box to give your consent and start collecting actions.

  4. Select the tenant.

  5. Select the project for which you want to record.

You can record simultaneously on multiple devices, or you can pause recording on a device and record on another device.

The actions from the different recorders are collected and populated as one dataset that is uploaded when both recorders are capturing for the same project. The details of the recording are displayed in the Team page. Refer to Team for details.

Recording another Project

There are scenarios where one recording user may be asked to capture data for two different projects. Although you can record for one project at the time, administrators can request users to switch to another project.

When your Project Administrator has approved a request for you to join another project, your current recording will be stopped. You will receive a notification message that you are invited to start recording for a new project.

Refer to Start capturing for more information.

The name of the project you are recording is displayed in the recorder window. Follow these steps to check out to which projects you are assigned.

  1. Select your account icon at the top of the recorder.

  2. Select My Projects from the menu.

Note:

Although you can receive and accept invites for multiple projects, you can only record for one project at a time.

Restarting application

If issues occur while recording a trace, you can restart the Task Mining application by following these steps:

  1. Open the Windows system tray.
  2. Right-click on the Recorder application and select Exit.

  3. Launch the Task Mining application via a shortcut on your desktop or search for it via the Windows search function.

Once capturing is completed, you can start Data Analysis and use the data resulted in the Discovery Results section.
