Upgrading

Important:

Please note that this is a change from our HW/SW specs from Insights 2021.10. Insights 2021.10 requires a single Windows machine, while Insights 2022.4 requires a Windows machine and a Linux machine with RHEL 8.2-8.5.

In 2021.10, the Insights Windows machine ran Docker which hosted the Looker Linux container. Starting with 2022, the driver used to nest the Linux containers in Windows OS (called lcow) is not supported anymore by Microsoft for enterprise applications. As a result, we had to change our deployment architecture to require 2 machines - one Windows machine to run the UiPath Insights components, and a Linux machine to run the Looker container. With this change, enterprise support is available from OS vendors for the components needed to run UiPath products. The supported versions of Linux OS are the same that Automation Suite supports.

Overview

You can upgrade Insights to the latest version using the installation package.

Note:

If you're upgrading from 2021.10 to 2022.4, please review the 2022.4 cheat sheet for functionality and feature comparisons from previous product versions before upgrading to 2022.4.

For upgrades from 2021.4 and below, make sure that you keep Insights enabled until you complete the installation of the new version (e.g., v2022.4) and finish creating your custom formulas and dashboards.

If you have a large database, consider manually indexing the RobotLog using a script. The installation might fail during the Insights Database migration if it has to index a large set of data.

Checklist

Before you start the upgrade process, check the following items, and take action based on your upgrade scenario:

TaskDescription
available Review system requirements Hardware and Software Requirements
available Database backup Make sure you back up your database.

Upgrade From 2021.4 or Earlier Version to 2022.4

To upgrade from 2021.4 or earlier version to 2022.4 version, make sure that you cover the following checklist.

TaskDescription
available Database backup For upgrades earlier than 2021.10, make sure you back up your database.
available Get disabled tenants data from previous installations If you need to report on data from disabled tenants, make sure to enable them first via the Insights Admin Tool.
Important: You can only get this data before starting the upgrade process on both Orchestrator and Insights. Historical data on disabled tenants is not available post-upgrade.

Upgrade From 2021.10 to 2022.4

TaskDescription
Log in to the Windows Machine using the same accountLookerPreInstallationTool using Windows User identity to validate and export your original Looker password and Volumes
Run LookerPreInstallationTool and export Looker volumesWhen upgrading your Looker on the Insights Linux Machine, run the preinstallation tool from the Insights Windows Machine to generate a ZIP file. Use the same procedure to run the Looker-initialization.sh script.

Make sure to export your Looker data (dashboards, views, and app settings), in Step 7 of the Looker Preinstallation tool section, to migrate your dashboards to the Insights Linux Machine. See Generate Looker files on the Window Machine.

Considerations When Uninstalling and Reinstalling Insights

Important: Consider the following action items when you upgrade Insights from 2021.4 or 20.21.10 versions to the 2022.4 version.

To upgrade to a new version of Insights, you need to install the most recent version, and then uninstall the old one.

  • Both the Orchestrator and Insights versions need to match. For example, if you have upgraded Orchestrator to 2022.4, you need to run the same 2022.4 version of Insights to establish proper communication between the two UiPath products.
  • Install the new Insights version on a separate machine from the existing installation.
  • Make sure you point Orchestrator to the new Insights Machine location. For this step, you need to provide a new Identity Installation Token. You can generate the installation token through UiPath Identity Management by logging in as the host tenant.

If you upgrade from 2021.10.0 and later, export the Looker volumes using the LookerPreInstallationTool and import them during the Looker initialization to migrate your dashboards from the old Insights Machine.

Important: Keep in mind, if you install Insights 22.4 on a new machine, that after you set up a connection to the new version, you will no longer be able to access the old version of Insights.

Once you are satisfied with your new custom dashboards and formulas, you can uninstall the old version of Insights.

Important: After installing the new version of Insights, data will no longer flow to your previous installation.

Open the UiPath Insights installation package and proceed through the license agreement. When you get to Orchestrator Settings, paste the installation token in the Identity Installation Token.

Click Upgrade to continue and confirm if you have backed up your database. Insights is installed on your machine.

Access to Insights is done through the Machine URL configured during installation.

Important: If you are upgrading from 21.4 or an older version, you can use the old dashboards to create your custom formulas and dashboards in your new version of Insights, however, no new data will flow to these dashboards.
