# Assigning project roles to users and groups

> Assign project-specific roles to users and groups to control the actions they can perform inside a testing project.

The roles that you can assign are the predefined roles and the custom roles that you created. They apply to the user or group inside the project. ## Prerequisites

* A project role alone does not grant create or update access — the user must also hold one of three license types: **Tester**, **App Tester**, or **App Test Developer** (the latter two are required specifically for Test Cloud functionality). Assigning a full project role to a user without an available license seat leaves them unable to create or update test cases, test sets, or other project artifacts. If your organization runs out of available license seats, raise a request with the licensing team to add more.

## Steps

1. Open Test Manager.
2. Open a project.
3. Navigate to **Project Settings** > **Manage Access**.
4. Select **Assign users/groups**.
5. Enter a user or group in the form field. For example, you can assign access to the [Everyone group](https://docs.uipath.com/automation-cloud/automation-cloud/latest/admin-guide/managing-accounts-and-groups#groups).
6. Select the [Tenant roles and Project roles](https://docs.uipath.com/test-manager/automation-cloud/latest/user-guide/tenant-roles-and-project-roles) that you want to assign. The roles that you can choose from are the pre-defined roles, and the custom roles that you may have created.
7. Select **Add** to confirm your action.

   Any user or group can be assigned or unassigned the **Project Owner** role. Ensure that each project has at least one user or group with the **Project Owner** role.

## Result

The selected users and groups are assigned the specified project roles. They can now perform the actions permitted by those roles within the project.
