Updating the Robot

About Updating

Before you proceed with updating the Robot, we highly recommend checking out the compatibility matrix.

It is usually recommended to first upgrade your Orchestrator and then your Robots.

Important: After an Orchestrator update, the Robots have to be reconnected to Orchestrator in order for them to apply the new settings.

Regardless of the version you want to update from, you need to take into consideration how the Robot was installed, in Service Mode or in User Mode.

As a general rule, we advise you to have the same Robot, Studio, and Orchestrator, so that you can take advantage of all the latest features. Studio and Robot must have the same version. You can always check the Robot version from the Assistant or from Orchestrator.

The installer can be downloaded from the Resource Center in UiPath Automation Cloud or provided by your customer success manager or the support team. To request a trial, go to https://cloud.uipath.com/portal_/register.

Note: If both Studio and Robot are on the same machine, you must upgrade them at the same time, regardless of whether the Robot was installed in Service Mode or in User Mode.
To update the Robot, run the UiPathStudio.msi installer using the installation wizard or from the command line. UiPathPlatformInstaller.exe is no longer available starting with version 2021.4.
Note: Remember to properly migrate your processes when updating the 2018.3 UiPath Platform. The dependencies and activities installation algorithm has improved, which can cause conflicts when executing processes with packages installed from local feeds. If you encounter any issues while updating, check out possible solutions on this page. Also, remember to check out how to Open Projects Created with Previous Versions.

Manual Update

About 32-bit and 64-bit Versions

Prior to version 2021.4, Studio and Robot were available as 32-bit applications. Starting with version 2021.4, a 64-bit installer is available by default. A 32-bit version is also available and can only be installed on 32-bit operating systems.

Update existing UiPathStudio.msi and UiPathPlatformInstaller.exe Enterprise installations as follows:
  • Use the 64-bit version of the installer (UiPathStudio.msi) to update existing 32-bit installations and 64-bit installations on 64-bit operating systems..
  • Use the 32-bit version of the installer (UiPathStudio-x86.msi) to update existing installations on 32-bit operating systems.
Existing 32-bit installations on 64-bit operating systems that are using the default installation path (C:\Program Files (x86)\UiPath\Studio) are migrated to C:\Program Files\UiPath\Studio after updating with the 64-bit installer. If the older version is installed in a custom location, the update does not change the installation path.

Service Mode Robot

If the Robot was previously installed in Service Mode and you want to update it, running UiPathStudio.msi without changing any settings in the installation wizard automatically replaces all the old files without modifying any of your settings.
Please keep in mind that, upon upgrade, the activities packages are cumulated in the C:\Program Files\UiPath\Studio\Packages folder. Find out more about managing dependencies.
To update the Service Mode Robot from the command line, use the following command: UiPathStudio.msi ADDLOCAL=DesktopFeature,Robot,RegisterService.

User Mode Robot

If the Robot was previously installed in User Mode and you want to update it, running UiPathStudio.msi without changing any settings in the installation wizard automatically replaces all the old files without modifying any of your settings.
To update the User Mode Robot from the command line use the following command: UiPathStudio.msi ADDLOCAL=DesktopFeature,Robot

Robot Deployment Conversion

When updating the Robot, you can also switch it from Service Mode to User Mode, or vice versa.

Note: When converting the Robot from Service-Mode to User-Mode, the Robot might not be able to access the .xaml files from original NuGet Packages folder. For details on how to resolve this, please read this guide which offers more details on this specific scenario
Note:

When updating the configuration variables, the Robot has to be restarted for changes to take effect. However, when updating the following settings in Orchestrator, a restart is not needed:

  • RunDisconnectedHours
  • SignalR settings (including on/off)
  • HeartbeatPeriodSeconds
  • NuGet feeds

Automatic Update

Starting with v2021.10, administrators can set up policies for automatically updating Studio, StudioX, Robot, and Assistant from Orchestrator. When a policy triggers the automatic update process, an Update Available notification is displayed by the UiPath Update Agent prompting you to start the update.

  • Select Update Now to perform the update. Please note that Studio and Assistant are closed during the update.
  • Select Skip to mute the notification. The update process can be resumed at any time in the 24 hours after the initial notification by clicking the UiPath icon in the system tray and then clicking Check for updates. If not resumed by the user, the update is installed automatically after 24 hours.

    Note:
    • During the update process, the Robot does not start any jobs until the update is completed.
    • If there are any processes running on the machine, the user is prompted to choose to either stop the process or wait for it to finish and continue with the update.
    • If a Studio session is open, the user is prompted to save the progress. If the user doesn’t react, Studio closes and the process is saved as-is at that time and can be recovered after the update is completed, while the Robot waits for any process to complete and starts the update process afterwards.

Community Edition

If you installed Studio and Robot using the Community Edition installer and activated it with a Community license, Studio and Robot are automatically updated as soon as a new version is available on the selected channel, Stable or Preview.

If you installed Studio and Robot using the Community Edition installer and activated it with an Enterprise license, Studio and Robot are automatically updated to the latest Stable release, regardless of the update channel you selected.

Note: Only Community Preview installations running version 2021.8 and later can be automatically updated to the latest Community Preview release.

When a new version is available, an Update Available notification is displayed by the UiPath® Update Agent prompting you to start the update.

  • Select Update Now to perform the update. Please note that Studio and Assistant are closed during the update.
  • Select Skip to mute the notification. The update process can be resumed at any time in the 24 hours after the initial notification by clicking the UiPath® icon in the system tray and then clicking Check for updates. If not resumed by the user, the update is installed automatically after 24 hours.

Please note that the Robot’s connection to Orchestrator is lost if you close Studio while the Community Edition automatic update is running. This issue does not reproduce on installations that are licensed.
