Robot accounts for unattended use

We have something great to share with you for this release: We have added a new type of account to Automation Cloud, the robot account.
This is a non-user identity that you can set up in the same way as regular user accounts, but no email address is required and the account is clearly identified as a robot throughout the platform. This account type is similar to what Windows uses for running its services and eliminates the need for creating dummy user accounts to run your unattended automations.

Read more about this type of account in About Accounts.

Managing robot accounts

Robot accounts, same as user accounts, are managed by the organization administrator.

We have added a dedicated tab under Admin > Accounts and Groups, called Robot accounts. The look and function of this page is similar to that of the Users tab, which you probably already know.

For instructions, see Adding Robot Accounts.

Robot accounts in UiPath Orchestrator:

Transitioning to robot accounts

If you have user accounts which you used for unattended processes, you can now transition the unattended process to a robot account.
To do so:

  1. Create a robot account.
  2. Set up the robot account for unattended use, same as you would set up a user account.
Make sure you assign the same roles and configure the same robot setup that the user account has to ensure that the process can continue to run without issues.
The robot account does not require any user licenses.
  3. Assign the robot account to the same folders where the user account was assigned.

  4. Optionally check for and remove any roles that the user account no longer needs.

Terminology changes

Because we now have several type of accounts, not only users, we have renamed the Users and Groups tab of the Admin page to Accounts and Groups.

Debugging unattended processes

We have also made some changes in UiPath Orchestrator so that you can now easily debug unattended processes when interactive login is enforced, which you might find interesting because it also applies for the new robot accounts.

Read the details in the Orchestrator Release Notes.
