# Settings reference

> All settings available in Delegate, organized by tab, including storage locations and configuration options for appearance, behavior, and integrations.

This page documents every setting available in Delegate, organized by the tab where you find it in the Settings panel. Open Settings by clicking the gear icon in the bottom-left corner of Delegate, or use the keyboard shortcut. See [Settings file locations](#settings-file-locations) below for where these settings are stored on disk.

## General

Default behavior for new tasks, language, startup, and how Delegate appears on your desktop.

| Setting | Options | Description |
|---|---|---|
| **Language** | Any supported language | UI language |
| **New tasks** | `Local`, `Remote` | Local keeps task messages on this device. Remote stores them on the server. |
| **Sound effects** | Toggle | Play audio feedback for task completion, achievements, and more |
| **Flash taskbar icon when approval is needed** | Toggle | Flash the taskbar icon when a task is waiting for your approval |

### Reset options

- **Reset Onboarding**: Re-run the welcome tour on next launch
- **Reset Setup**: Re-run the initial setup wizard on next launch

Neither option resets your connections, skills, or preferences.

## Behavior preferences

Configure how Delegate communicates and acts. These preferences guide interaction style.

![Behavior preferences showing the Work profile preset, Communication (Style, Tone), and Behavior (Proactivity, Clarification) settings](https://dev-assets.cms.uipath.com/assets/images/delegate/behavior-preferences-1-36003937.webp)

Some preferences may conflict with Delegate's default behavior or safety guidelines. In those cases, built-in defaults take precedence.

### Work profile

A preset that adjusts all the preferences below at once — for example, an "Engineering" preset.

### Communication

| Setting | What it controls | Options |
|---|---|---|
| **Style** | How verbose responses should be | Concise, Balanced, Detailed |
| **Tone** | The tone of responses | Professional, Friendly, Direct, Technical, Executive-ready |

### Behavior

| Setting | What it controls | Options |
|---|---|---|
| **Proactivity** | How actively Delegate suggests actions | Reactive only, Suggest next steps, Highly proactive |
| **Clarification** | How Delegate handles unclear requests | Ask before assumptions, Make reasonable assumptions, Minimize questions |

### Action transparency

Three independent toggles, each off unless noted:

![Action transparency toggles, additional notes with quick-add suggestions, and custom preferences](https://dev-assets.cms.uipath.com/assets/images/delegate/behavior-preferences-2-caee2593.webp)

| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| **Explain before execution** | Describe intended actions before performing them |
| **Summarize after execution** | Provide a summary after completing actions (on by default) |
| **Highlight risks** | Warn about risks before sensitive actions |

### Additional notes

Free-text instructions Delegate follows going forward, up to 2500 characters — for example, "Always use bullet points" or "Respond in Spanish." Quick-add suggestions are offered (use code blocks for commands, always use bullet points, keep it under 3 sentences, include code examples, explain tradeoffs).

### Custom preferences

Add your own name/value pairs beyond the built-in settings above — for example, Name: "Language", Value: "Always respond in Spanish".

## Security

See [Security settings reference](security-settings-reference.md).

## Privacy

Choose what diagnostic data Delegate sends to UiPath. You can change this any time.

| Setting | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| **Usage analytics** | On | Tool usage, feature interactions, and session duration. The content of your tasks is never sent. |
| **Crash reports** | On | Errors and stack traces when something goes wrong. Helps fix bugs faster. |
| **Essential telemetry** | Always on | License validation and security audit. |

A link to the privacy policy is available directly on this tab.

## Apps & defaults

Configure how Delegate hands off work to your operating system and applications.

The following table describes the application defaults you can configure.

| Setting | Options | Description |
|---------|---------|-------------|
| **Default File Opener** | `System`, `Explorer`, `Cursor`, `VS Code`, etc. | Which application opens files when Delegate needs an editor |
| **Default Mail Handler** | `System`, `Outlook`, `Gmail`, `Custom` | How Delegate sends emails |
| **Default Calendar Handler** | `Follow Mail`, `System`, `Outlook`, `Gmail`, `Custom` | How Delegate manages calendar events |
| **Default Office App** | `System`, `Office`, `iWork` (macOS only) | Preferred suite for document creation |

### Custom handlers

When selecting **Custom** for mail or calendar:
- Enter the application name in the **Custom Name** field
- Delegate uses system APIs to hand off to that application

### Named browser profiles

Configure up to 3 browser profiles for Delegate to use in different contexts.

| Field | Description |
|-------|-------------|
| **Name** | Friendly label (e.g., "Personal", "Work") |
| **Profile** | Browser and profile directory (e.g., `chrome:Default`, `edge:Profile 1`) |

**Format**: `<browserType>:<profileDirectory>`
- `browserType`: `chrome` or `edge`
- `profileDirectory`: `Default`, `Profile 1`, `Profile 2`, etc.

#### Discovery
- Chrome profiles: `~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/` (macOS) or `%LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\` (Windows)
- Edge profiles: `~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft Edge/` (macOS) or `%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\` (Windows)

**Use case**: Separate work and personal browsing contexts. Each profile has its own cookies, logins, and extensions.

## Recordings

Record yourself performing a task on your screen, to use afterward as the basis for a routine, a skill, or as source material for documentation such as a PDD.

![Recordings list showing name, date, project, steps, and duration](https://dev-assets.cms.uipath.com/assets/images/delegate/recordings-list-d6868a4a.webp)

Each recording captures your steps and which apps you used:

![Recording detail showing steps captured, total time, apps used, and actions to build a routine or delete the recording](https://dev-assets.cms.uipath.com/assets/images/delegate/recording-detail-6f5e68fc.webp)

From a recording, you can:
- **Build routine** — turn the recording directly into a Routine.
- Add optional notes describing what the recording is for.
- **Show in Explorer** — locate the recording file on disk.
- **Delete** — remove the recording.

## Keyboard shortcuts

Customize keyboard shortcuts for common Delegate actions.

### Default shortcuts

The following table lists the default keyboard shortcuts.

| Action | macOS | Windows | Description |
|--------|-------|---------|-------------|
| **Toggle Window** | `Cmd+Shift+Space` | `Ctrl+Shift+Space` | Show or hide Delegate |
| **New Conversation** | `Cmd+N` | `Ctrl+N` | Start a new chat |
| **New Window** | `Cmd+Shift+N` | `Ctrl+Shift+N` | Open Delegate in a new window |

### Customizing shortcuts

To customize keyboard shortcuts, take the following steps:

1. Go to **Settings** → **Keyboard Shortcuts**.
2. Find the action to modify.
3. Select the shortcut field.
4. Press your desired key combination.
5. Select **Save**.

### Avoiding conflicts

If your chosen shortcut conflicts with a system or application shortcut, it may not work reliably. Use combinations with `Cmd+Shift` (macOS) or `Ctrl+Shift` (Windows) to minimize conflicts.

## Advanced

Settings for power users and developers.

| Setting | Default | Description |
|---------|---------|-------------|
| **Use Deferred Tools** | `Off` | Send lightweight tool stubs; activate full tools on demand |
| **Context Grounding Indexes** | — | Enable or disable specific context sources |
| **Window PiP Preference** | `ChildSession` | Picture-in-picture mode (Windows only) |
| **Auth TCP Port** (Windows) | — | Fallback port for Windows elevation authentication |

### Context grounding indexes

Enable or disable specific context sources that feed into Delegate's understanding:
- **Web Search Index**: Recent web search results
- **File System Index**: Recently accessed files
- **Conversation Index**: Past conversation content
- **Custom Indexes**: Organization-specific knowledge bases

**Privacy note**: Disabling indexes reduces context awareness but increases privacy.

**Centrally governed:** An administrator can control this at the policy level under **Skills & Knowledge**, with a single **Enable context grounding knowledge** toggle that allows or blocks the agent from using organization knowledge bases and document indexes for grounded responses. Built-in skills, such as the Excel and PowerPoint document-generation capabilities, are core product capabilities and are not configurable through this policy tab. See [Governance with Automation Ops](centralized-configuration.md).

## Settings file locations

For power users who want to edit settings directly or back up configurations.

### Main settings file

The following table lists the settings file location for each supported platform.

| Platform | Path |
|----------|------|
| **macOS** | `~/Library/Application Support/UiPath/Delegate/settings.json` |
| **Windows** | `%APPDATA%/UiPath/Delegate/settings.json` |
| **Linux** | `~/.config/UiPath/Delegate/settings.json` |

- Plain JSON format; human-readable and editable
- Changes take effect immediately (Delegate watches for file changes)
- Invalid JSON is rejected; Delegate uses the last valid configuration

### Secure settings file

The following table lists the secure settings file location for each supported platform.

| Platform | Path |
|----------|------|
| **macOS** | Same directory, `secure-settings.enc` (Keychain encryption) |
| **Windows** | Same directory, `secure-settings.enc` (Data Protection API (DPAPI) encryption) |

- Contains: tool categories, Approval Mode, authentication tokens
- Only modifiable through the Settings UI
- Agents cannot read or modify this file

### Other files

The following table lists other files stored in the settings directory.

| File | Contents |
|------|----------|
| `WindowState.json` | Window position, size, sidebar state |
| `conversations.db` | Local conversation history (when using Local storage) |
| `LocalSkills/` | Installed skills and routines |
