How to URL-encode a PostgreSQL connection string password
URL-encode special characters in a PostgreSQL connection string password using Python's urllib.parse.quote_plus() on EKS/AKS.
If your PostgreSQL connection string password contains special characters, you must URL-encode them before including the password in the connection string.
To URL-encode a PostgreSQL password:
-
Run the following Python command, replacing
your_passwordwith your actual password:import urllib.parse urllib.parse.quote_plus("your_password")import urllib.parse urllib.parse.quote_plus("your_password")Python encodes every character except the unreserved set A-Z, a-z, 0-9,
-,.,_,~. -
Use the encoded output as the password in your PostgreSQL connection string.
Result
The command returns the URL-encoded password. For example, urllib.parse.quote_plus("P@ss:w0rd/1") returns P%40ss%3Aw0rd%2F1.
The following table shows common special characters and their percent-encoded equivalents:
| Character | URL encoding |
|---|---|
@ | %40 |
: | %3A |
/ | %2F |
? | %3F |
# | %23 |
% | %25 |
[ | %5B |
] | %5D |
^ | %5E |
| | %7C |
| space | %20 |
& | %26 |
